Archieve And Its Importance

After the bifurcation of the state of M.P. the Chhattisgarh state came into existence on 1st Nov. 2000. For the new state of Chhattisgarh Archives branch, which is a part of the Dept. of Culture and Archaeology, only meagre staff was sanctioned. Initially the Archives branch was a separate Directorate, but later on it was merged with the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums and came to be known as the Directorate of Archaeology, Archives and Museums. It may be mentioned that the record of the Archives, from 1920 to 1956, is at present with the M.P. Secretariat (GAD). Also the records from 1798 to 1919 are lying in the Directorate of Archaeology, Archives and Museums at Bhopal which are known as Central Provinces and Berar records.

In Chhattisgarh, there is no separate building for the Archives. At Raipur the branch of Archives is to be housed in a separate building. All the records lying with the M.P. Govt. and also with various divisional and zonal offices in Chhattisgarh are to be transferred in the newly proposed building. In addition to this, all the records lying in the libraries of the educational institutions as also in the private collections will be shifted and repositored at one place so that the various functions of the branch can be carried on without any difficulty.

The 58th session of the Indian Historical Records Commission (IHRC) is going to be held at Raipur on 25th and 26th April 2003 in the campus of the Pt. Ravi Shankar University in which the following points are to be put forth.

  1. Session 53rd, Resolution III, As we keep on collecting the Archive records these would be passed on to IHRC from time to time.
  2. As per the Resolution V, if the Chhattisgarh records are lying in foreign countries efforts would be made to transfer these to Chhattisgarh with the help of National Archives of India (NAI).
  3. Session 54th, Resolution V, After the reorganization of the state, the staff employed in Archives is insufficient and hence steps need to be taken to enhance the strength of the staff.
  4. Resolution VI, As there is no separate building for the Archives steps may be taken to construct a new building.
  5. Session 56th, Resolution II, The staff should be sent for special training programme from time to time for upkeep of the preservation and management of records.
  6. Resolution III, As the collections become available we shall help the NAI to update the National Register of Record which is being prepared by them. In this connection we shall also take help from various universities/ Institutions. We would like to request the state Govt. to kindly pass the Public Record Act as there is a similar act in other states also.
  7. Resolution VIII, The Archives record of Chhattisgarh is available in different languages as English, Persian , Chhattisgarhi, Urdu, Oriya etc. For demonstration of the exhibitions of this kind as also for translation in other languages, efforts would be made to provide proper facilities.
  8. Resolution X, The records that become available to us will be computerized and microfilmed for longevity, proper conservation and upkeep and for this we would take the help of NAI.
  9. Session 57th, Resolution 4th, For presenting /completing the various resolutions of IHRC, well qualified/ experienced staff will be deputed for the purpose on behalf of the Directorate. Resolution V, If we get the records concerning the Freedom Movement of India from various areas in Chhattisgarh, we would place it before the commission for its information and also make these available to any individual / institution on request.
